I recently upgraded to Microsoft Windows 10 and found that iTunes no longer detected my Apple iPad or iPhone. Here’s how I fixed it.

In Windows 10, go to Device Manager Go to View Devices by connection Expand and search for the entry 'Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)' Right-click on the entry above called 'USB Composite Device' and choose Update driver software. Fix 1

  1. Ensure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
  2. Plug your Apple device into a USB port on your computer using the included USB cable.
  3. Ensure your device is on the Home screen. If there is any prompt to “Trust“, select to trust the device.
  4. In Windows, select “Start“, then type “Control Panel“.
  5. Select “Control Panel” in the list of items to open.
  6. Select “Devices and Printers“.
  7. Your iPhone or iPad should be displayed in the “Unspecified” section. Right-click it and select “Properties“.
    Note: If you don’t see your device listed here, ensure you have selected to trust the PC on the device and you are using a supported cable.
  8. Select the “Hardware” tab, then click the “Properties” button.
  9. From the “General” tab, select the “Change settings” button.
  10. Select the “Driver” tab, then select “Update Driver“.
  11. Choose “Browse my computer for driver software“.
  12. Select “Browse…” then navigate to “C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleMobile Device SupportDrivers“. If you don’t have this folder, check in “C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAppleMobile Device SupportDrivers“. If you still don’t see it, try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes.
    Note: Since a few of you have messaged me that you still don’t see this folder, I have zipped up the files and made them available for download here. Unzip the folder somewhere, then point Windows to the files.
  13. Click “Next” > “Close.

Your Apple device should now be detected successfully within iTunes.

Fix 2 – Ensure Services are Running

  1. Select the “Start” button, , type “services.msc“, then press “Enter“.
  2. Ensure the following services are set to start automatically and are started:
    • iPod Service
    • Apple Mobile Device Service
    • Bonjour Service

FAQ

Why don’t I have the “Drivers” folder?

It is possible your installation of iTunes didn’t include it. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes and the folder should be re-created.

If iTunes, and the Apple Mobile Device Service are apparently installed correctly, try the following:


  1. Open Control Panel > Device Manager
  2. Plug in your device
  3. Locate Universal Serial Bus Controllers > Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.
    It is also possible the device may show under Imaging Devices, Portable Devices or Other Devices or as an MTB USB Device.
  4. Right-click and select Update Driver Software...
  5. Click Browse my computer for driver software

  7. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
  8. Click Apple Mobile Device USB Driver
  9. Click Next, then Close and exit Device Manager
